Experts you can prompt

Improve ChatGPT Results with Expert Prompting

Allow me to introduce: Expert Prompting

A new technique for working with ChatGPT known as Expert Prompting has emerged and has been showing great success in getting better and more accurate results by asking GPT to impersonate and act as an expert in a given domain. You do this by asking GPT to act as a specific expert, and by doing so GPT actually tries to take on that person’s knowledge and act as they would – resulting in far better quality of responses and information. The best part is that GPT will provide the expert that it should act as – and you can simply instruct it to assume that persons role and act as them. There are some tricks and tips that make this even more effective that we will discuss as well.

Lets start with an example : Say I want to learn more about quantum physics and want to prime ChatGPT to give me the best answers possible. Instead of outright asking our question or trying to engineer and optimize a prompt, we simply allow ChatGPT to do the work for us by utilizing expert prompting

First, ask ChatGPT to provide experts for your specified area (could be any number of programming languages, writing, any field of science, etc.):

Now ask the LLM to take on the qualities of one of these experts and act as they would:

This context-setting acts as a guidepost for the model to generate responses that the expert themselves would give and its attempt to mirror the expert often increases the quality of its answers

Guided by the initial instruction, the model will aim to produce responses mirroring a world expert quantum physicist, providing information with the assumed richness of expert knowledge and bringing it to a higher knowledge level than base GPT would provide.

Take it a step further:

Using Expert Prompting we can have ChatGPT not just act as one expert, but combine a group of them all and form an answer as a collaborative. This strategy can yield even better results and avoid the bias that one expert may have, essentially aggregating all of the best knowledge from a group of experts.

Chat GPT Expert Prompting

This can also avoid getting an answer biased to the beliefs of one expert, instead balancing between the ideas of the group.

In this example I just used 3 experts, and just asked for the “foremost” experts, but there is massive potential for creativity with this and many directions you can take it in

You could ask for 5, or even 10 experts

You could ask for the members of an important panel or board and have GPT act as them while you ask questions

Some Expert Prompting Examples

Content creation and Marketing:

Ask the model to assume the role of an accomplished copywriter or a successful content strategist, or blend a few of them together to get a unique new style

Education:

GPT could assume the role of a prominent historical figure to describe historic events, this would create vastly more engaging and entertaining education content

Interactive learning as well – students could engage with ChatGPT with prompts like

“You are a historian specializing in the Renaissance. Can you describe the major influences of this period on modern culture”

Business Strategy:

Simulate a conversation with a seasoned business consultant. Prompts such as

“List the most prolific business consultants and assume the role of them as a collaborative. Can you suggest some strategies to increase market penetration for my startup?”

Fiction Writing

This is an interesting but possibly controversial one. Take on the role of a few authors in a specific area of fiction to blend their writing styles. Stephen King + John Grisham could get really interesting.

One Caveat:

So there is one catch. As much as Expert Prompting can yield contextually robust and on-point responses, remember that GPT isn’t an actual expert. It doesn’t possess personal experience or years of study in a certain field. Instead, it generates responses based on the patterns it has learned from a massive amount of training data. So while the information it provides can be insightful, it’s always a good idea to verify it and use it as a starting point for further research, rather than accepting it as absolute truth.

Regardless, Expert Prompting stands out as a really promising technique to pull out more detailed responses from ChatGPT and other language models, upgrading them beyond their default prompting capabilities and raising their knowledge level
